SCOTS are staying away from Spain and going to Turkey instead as the costas lose their crown in the package holiday market for the first time.
Turkey has overtaken Spain this year as the number one foreign holiday destination - a "seismic shift" according to experts as Spain has been the UK's top choice for 40 years.
Co-op Travel has analysed more than 200,000 bookings to 30 top foreign holiday destinations across all major UK tour operators.
It found that nearly a third more Britons are heading to Turkey this summer compared with last summer.
Bookings to Majorca, the previous top choice, are down 13%, partly due to the soaring euro. Holiday giant mergers, such as Thomas Cook and MyTravel, are also taking their toll as operators have reduced the supply of flights to short-haul western Mediterranean resorts by as much as 23%, leading to a shortage of low-price late deals.
The average selling price of a holiday to Turkey is as much as £108 cheaper than to Majorca - £357 compared to £465.
