Opportunities await triumphant AKP in Turkey (2011-06-17)

Turkey voted resoundingly to re-elect the AKP and the current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and now the country can resume normal business and attend to pressing economic affairs. One of the most important things the government has to do is to take charge of the current account deficit and the booming economy, as inflation is steadily rising. Unlike most ordinary governments who are charged with speeding up the economy, this government needs to slow it down. The central bank in Turkey has already started addressing the issue of the current account deficit and introduced measures in November 2010, and although these haven't yet achieved the desired results it seems likely that now the elections are over the central bank will begin implementing additional methods. With the countries rapid economic growth has meant an increasing demand for energy, and Turkey has already begun putting in place an efficient energy policy and is working on diversifying energy sources, as well as beginning to realise the full potential of renewable energy. This part of economic reforms is closely linked to the current account deficit as energy imports account for a large portion of this deficit. Although unemployment rates are falling, and have declined by nearly 3% during the last year, the problem is still urgent and the government needs to build on steps previously taken to give priority to domestic products when considering government tenders. Regional development is also becoming increasingly important with development agencies set up during the last term expected to show good results during this term. It's expected that Turkey will continue to attract a sizeable amount of foreign direct and productive investment, and it's still seen as being one of the best places in the world in which to invest.
