EasyJet opens new routes in Turkey (2010-12-17)

Easyjet have launched a series of new flights from Gatwick airport, one of which is to the upcoming Turkish resort of Izmir.

Earlier this year, the government announced plans to invest heavily in Izmir, to turn it into one of Europe's great yachting centres, with new marinas, expansion of existing harbours and marinas, and infrastructure upgrades.

This of course is in a region that is already incredibly attractive to tourists and property buyers because of its core attributes: namely, low property prices, Mediterranean coast and climate, 300 days of sunshine per year, in short: sun, sea and sand in abundance.

An easyJet spokesman said the 13pc capacity growth was in line with its announcement at last month's full-year results that "capacity is expected to be up by 12pc for the full year and 14pc in the first half" of 2011 – after adjusting for a lower than planned number of flights in 2010 due to the Icelandic volcano and European air traffic control strikes.

Carolyn McCall, EasyJet chief executive, said the summer schedule would be "our biggest ever", with easyJet flying 551 routes across 30 countries.

The new flights to Izmir will not only boost the Izmir property market, but in the places surrounding the airport, within 60 - 90 minutes away. It will also tie in well with plans to expand the region's appeal as a marina center, for people who want or need to moor their boat and fly to the UK or elsewhere.
