Alanya Gazipasa Welcomes First International Flight (2011-05-04)

Alanya's Gazipasa airport has welcomed its first international flight. After making two flyovers to impress the celebrating crowd, the Boeing 737 from Holland landed to a roaring cheer. The Transavia flight was greeted by a water arch from the fire brigade, and its passengers enjoyed Turkish music and dance as they disembarked.

The Gazipasa airport was built around a decade ago, but legal wrangling kept it from receiving even a single flight. After multiple openings came and went over the years it seemed the airport would never open, that is until TAV took over in 2009. In 2010 the airport welcomed its first domestic flight, and TAV said international flights would follow once the runway expansion works were completed this year. As they have now followed through on this, one must hope that their other promises will also follow, like flights to and from the UK.

Alanya is one of Turkey's top tourism destinations, and now, with an airport so close it will almost certainly see this popularity grow. Alanya is home to Turkey's largest population of expats, and in the last 5 years it has been a top favourite with overseas property buyers as well, and all this with the nearest airport being 90 minutes away at Antalya. With an airport now just 10 minutes away the Alanya property market is expected to experience a mini-boom in the next few years.
